a Novelty

Are you keeping up with a Novelty as its story unwraps across the campus?

Children of Letterboxers present a unique interactive literature experience that meshes text and treasure hunt.

‘A Novelty’ embodies a new kind of writing in which small chapters and written fragments are hidden in urban environments for participants to collect and collate.

‘A Novelty’ has been specially created for Mudfest11, and will inhabit hidden spaces throughout the grounds of the University of Melbourne Parkville Campus from the 10th to the 29th of August, 2009.

MUDFEST Speaks

MUDFEST SPEAKS – and he won’t Shut-Up!!!

MUDFEST11 organisers implement drastic measures to get some peace and quiet in the MUDFEST offices.

The MUDFEST offices have been experiencing an unexpected problem this week as MUDFEST11 gets underway. It seems that MUDFEST (or “Muddy” as he is affectionately known) is so excited about all the events going on around Melbourne University that he just can’t stop talking about himself. Sources tell us that, while they love that he appreciates their work, it is nevertheless driving everyone in the office a little bit insane. Not wanting to offend the festival the organisers of MUDFEST11 have come up with an idea to get Muddy out of the office and into the festival grounds. They have given him his own special program to channel his endless reserves of energy into and they have called it – MUDFEST Speaks.

We have been told that the Potter Gallery came to the organiser’s assistance providing Muddy with a space for him to natter away in. These Chats at the Potter will be held over a series of 4 lunchtime talks (Muddy get’s particularly bubbly around this time) from Tuesday 18th – Friday 21st August. The organiser’s decided on 4 talks as Muddy adores so many different art forms that they couldn’t bear to ask him to choose a favourite topic so he will get a chance to talk about all his loves: Music, Art, Theatre, and Performance Art.

However, organiser’s soon ran into another problem when they remembered that Muddy is a bit of a social butterfly and wouldn’t appreciate having to entertain all on his own. Worried that they had made a mistake the festival organiser’s were once again given a helping hand by some of Muddy’s closest friends who jumped at the chance to be a part of Muddy’s special event. As a result, each MUDFEST Speaks will have a panel of three to six MUDFEST11 artists and an experienced arts worker as interviewer, providing a great opportunity for MUDFEST11 artists to learn from these experienced artists while speaking of their own work as well as providing an opportunity for an audience to hear about and discuss the creation of contemporary art. The program will run as follows:

Muddy Speaks about Music with Stefan Cassomenos 1pm Tuesday 18 August

Muddy Speaks about Visual Arts with Trefor Prest 1pm Wednesday 19 August

Muddy Speaks about Performance Art with Claire Hooper 1pm Thursday 20 August

Muddy Speaks about Theatre with David Woods 1pm Friday 21 August

Sources close to Muddy have told us that he is “thrilled and honoured” about being asked to give these talks and that he has been so busy preparing himself for his big public debut that the MUDFEST offices have experienced an unprecedented surge in productivity. It appears that, thanks to the tireless efforts of all those involved, peace has finally been restored.

All MUDFEST Speaks are free and are held at the Potter Gallery, Swanston St

Can you bring the funny?

We are looking for funny people!

Comedy Survivor is this Thursday in the Festival Club and we need you to get on stage and bring the funny

Billed as a comedic fight for ascendancy, Comedy Survivor will be a fun night in the club where you can try your hand at stand up or if you have already had a go trial something new.

How does it work?

Everyone does a two minute short intro set to begin with, a little crowd attention grabber, a little taster of what you are about and a good chance to get rid of your nerves and let the audience get a little drunker

Round two is when things get serious, the quarter finals as you are picked randomly to face off against another comedian in delivering a three minute set and the audience picks the winner leaving the four semi finalists

Round three our final four return with a two minute stand up piece relating to a mystery object or location as given to them by the host. Yes, written in 15 minutes, a new 3 minute standup routine.

Which leads us to the final… but you have to be there to find out how that one’s gonna roll

Keen to try your hand and see if you can be a Comedy Survivor? Then email d.ryding@union.unimelb.edu.au now! Spaces are limited to 8 people!

Jumping on board MUDFESTs only yacht club

‘Tis that time of the season again, and the crew and I are glad to have ye newcomers on board our yacht club. We hope yer all ready for some adventurous voyages and bloodcurdling battles! Of course we can’t forget those of you who have been here from the beginning, too.

But this time, ye be WARNED! If any of yer mangy rascals pulls another hair-raising stunt same as last year, ye’ll be kicked overboard without a moment’s butts about it.

Francis, I got me eyes on you ’specially.

All the rest of yer, me boats are ready and floating. Have yer competitive spirits rising and see yer on board!

- Captain Puddleduck.
